Where Should You Buy Aquarium Fish?

Where should you buy aquarium fish? Well, it just depends.

I’ve seen this topic heavily debated on social and in forums online.

Buying Aquarium Fish: A Little Backstory

Over the years, since 2016 to be exact, I’ve bought countless fish and several blue crayfish for my aquariums. And, I’ve purchased these fish from a variety of locations.

I have bought electric blue rams and other freshwater fish at specialty fish stores as well as chain stores and even flea markets. The success of each fish has varied greatly.

Should You Buy Your Aquarium Fish at Chain Stores or Local Stores?

Personally, I like to support local businesses. Also, I feel that the staff at local fish stores are often more knowledgeable about freshwater fish, aquariums, and care.

I will say, my healthiest fish have come from either local fish stores or directly from the breeder. I will also say, I’ve had several aquarium fish die quickly after being purchased at chain stores.

Now, I know the reasons can be numerous for freshwater fish dying in an aquarium, but every time mine have died, from what I could tell, my water parameters were perfect (that I can remember).

Also, I can’t throw every chain store under the bus. My blue crayfish that lived for four years was from a chain store and so was a rainbow shark I purchased for one of my tanks. He lived for about five years.

What About Ordering Fish Online?

Personally, I’ve never ordered any of my aquarium fish online. With that said, there seem to be plenty of reputable sellers, but for me, the shipping has always been a bit too pricey. That’s why I will make a special order through local fish stores if I’m really wanting a fish that is hard to find. I’ve done this a few times and have been able to pick up my fish the same day in the breeder’s bag.

Chain Store Purchase Guarantees

Stores like Petco and PetSupermarket both have money-back guarantees on any freshwater fish purchased in their stores. However, in order to get a refund or a replacement, they often require a receipt, water sample, and sometimes even the fish. Personally, I would rather not buy from these stores unless I’m purchasing my aquarium plants or the occasional fish that I consider to be hardy.

Last Word

Where you choose to buy your fish for your aquarium is, of course, up to you. But after years of buying fish for my different aquariums, if you have the chance, I’d recommend buying from a local dealer. Not only will you be supporting local business, but based on my experience, you are more likely to purchase healthier fish.
