Where Can I Get a Fish Tank for Cheap?

cycle a fish tank faster

If you are one of those folks asking yourself, “where can I get a fish tank for cheap,” I have a few suggestions.

Personally, I’ve never been crazy about getting second-hand stuff, unless it’s an antique of some sort.

However, when it comes to mechanical merchandise, I have my reservations. Having said that though, I can recommend some places to get a fish tank for cheap.

Second-Hand Stores

Regardless of how you might feel about Goodwill as a store, you can get good deals on fish tanks there. Heck, I’ve seen them.

There are other mom and pop thrift stores you might want to check out as well. If you are building a tank from the ground up, these types of stores might be great places to save on the tank itself.

Personally, I’m not sure how much I’d expect out of a second-hand pump and filter for my fish tank, but a solid tank at a discount from a Goodwill store would be a good find.

Craigslist

Craigslist is a good site for finding deals on most anything. Heck, I’ve seen some deals where people literally just want to give something away for free simply because they don’t want to have to fool with moving it themselves.

Speaking of places to get a fish tank for cheap, just today I saw a brand new Aqueon, 29-gallon fish tank for $40 on Craigslist. That’s not too bad.

I also saw a like-new, 40-gallon fish tank for $40. So, it goes without saying, Craigslist can be a place to score a cheap fish tank.

What is the Optimal Fish Tank?

Yard Sales

This one is kind of hit or miss and can be time-consuming.

I mean, personally, I love yard sales, but I wouldn’t want to drive around for hours trying to find the perfect deal on a used fish tank. So this wouldn’t be my first choice in my hunt to find a tank.

Amazon

This is probably my top choice. Simply because it’s easy to do.

Logon to Amazon, shop from your home, and get your fish tank delivered to you within days.

Heck, some sellers can get you your tank the next day if you want. There are always sales on the Amazon website as well. Additionally, you can purchase gravel, site ornaments, and other accessories you might need for your tank on Amazon. Heck, you can even buy blue crayfish on Amazon. Personally, though, I recommend buying these at a store in town.

Get a Fish Tank for Cheap on Facebook Marketplace

This is actually a very great place to buy all sorts of things locally. I’ve sold several items through Facebook Marketplace and I’ve also seen some great deals there, including fish tanks. So I highly recommend scrolling through Facebook Marketplace and looking to see if you can find a deal on an aquarium. Of course, don’t be surprised if you start seeing ads for aquariums two minutes after you look at one on Facebook Marketplace.

eBay

And of course, there is eBay.

I used to be a PowerSeller on eBay and have purchased several items on the site. It too is an option to help you get a fish tank for cheap. It’s just not a site that I use regularly now.

So yes, there are many options to help you get a fish tank for cheap, it just all depends on what your preference might be.

If you go the used fish tank route, always remember that the equipment you purchase might be less than average.

In the end, you could even have to turn around and buy it again.

And, a final pro-tip, if you are buying a fish tank for a blue crayfish, make sure you purchase one that is big enough. Based on my experience, a 20-gallon tank is optimal, especially if you plan to keep another or fish or two in the tank.

yeah dont get a second hand pump / filter system. you will probably just end up having to get a new one shortly. I bought a beautiful tank at a garage sale and new filter and its still going strong!
